What We Do

Windle Trust Uganda works through several different innovative programmes to help war-affected Africans gain opportunities for education.

  1. Access for Refugees to Secondary, Vocational and University Education

For the past 12 years, Windle Trust Uganda has served as the implementing partner for the United Nations High Commission for Refugee’s secondary and university scholarship programme, known as ‘DAFI.’ Started with 11 refugees, the DAFI programme has sponsored over 200 refugees from Sudan, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Ethiopia, and Burundi for secondary and university study, almost half of whom are women. Once selected for sponsorship, Windle Trust Uganda works closely with each individual beneficiary. This includes assisting beneficiaries with their school applications, providing guidance in selecting courses of study that best suit their interests and needs, providing guidance, and pairing each beneficiary with a faculty partner to help them succeed.

  2. Access for War-Affected Youth in Northern Uganda to Secondary and Vocational Education

The Acholi Bursary Scheme (ABS) is Windle Trust Uganda’s programme for war-affected youth in Northern Uganda. Started in 2006, the ABS is currently the largest supporter of access to secondary and vocational education for former LRA abductees, orphans, young and child-mothers, young heads of households, chronically ill, disabled, and other marginalized youth in this conflict-torn region. The goal of the ABS is to contribute to reconciliation, reintegration and reconstruction in the Acholi sub-region through access to quality education. Through a holistic sponsorship programme that includes paying for tuition and related education fees, scholastic materials and uniforms, psychosocial counseling, access to healthcare and Life Skills training, the ABS has opened access to education for over 5,000 war-affected Acholi youth — including former abductees — thus helping them to reintegrate into their families and communities, gain self-confidence and self-esteem, and contribute to rebuilding their devastated region.

The Windle Trusts Uganda Acholi Bursary Scheme has also constructed numerous classrooms, library buildings, and student and teacher hostels in sub-region, whose educational infrastructure was destroyed in the war.
